Vigilance. Marginalization. These are the workplace experiences reported by queer-identified staff employed in “mainstream” foundations. As a nationwide survey uncovered the reality of these lived experiences, we’ve also come to learn that, in spite of the barriers and risks facing them, many of these anonymous queer colleagues are actively nudging their organizations to invest in LGBTQIA+ communities, contributing towards the larger goal of increasing mainstream funding to our community. These are the invisible colleagues we’re unlikely to meet at LGBTQIA+ conferences, and yet they just may be our greatest key to unlocking the philanthropic support our community needs.
In this action-oriented session, participants will learn how to reach, support, and engage queer-identified staff working in “mainstream” foundations. In small work groups facilitated by funders with experience reaching mainstream foundations, each participant will consider how to use the tools, resources, and strategies presented throughout the conference to develop realistic, concrete actionable steps aimed at: a) reducing isolation for queer colleagues, and b) catalyzing greater mainstream philanthropic investments in LGBTQIA+ issues. Open to funders of any experience level, from all types of foundations. Whether you are an extrovert or introvert, love or hate small-group discussions – session facilitators are dedicated to creating a comfortable, productive space for every participant. Simply come prepared to think critically and work intentionally!
While not required, it is highly recommended that participants first attend the “Engaging Local Philanthropy” session, to be held at 11:15 on Friday– participants who attend both sessions will experience maximum benefit.
