Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP), a fiscally-sponsored project of Tides, is a growing community of foundation professionals and other changemakers working to advance equity within and through philanthropy. EPIP's mission is to empower emerging leaders and elevate philanthropic practice to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. EPIP has established itself as a leading network for diverse early-and mid-career philanthropic professionals, particularly those who identify as people of color, women, and/or LGBTQ. EPIP's 14 member-led chapters span the country and provide peer-to-peer programs, networking opportunities, and support while serving as platforms for member leadership.  National programs like the biannual conference and Philanthropology, coupled with local programming led by EPIP Chapters, connect members to additional support, knowledge, and opportunities.

About the Opportunity

EPIP is seeking a Chief of Staff to support EPIP's internal operations. In this role, you will provide strategic oversight, project management, and communication throughout the organization to support EPIP's continued growth, effectiveness, and impact over time. The Chief of Staff will work closely with the Executive Director, staff leadership, and the Board of Directors to manage executive communication and design systems, policies, and procedures supporting the organization. Additionally, the Chief of Staff will serve as a champion of organizational culture and staff learning.

The ideal candidate is a thought partner and synthesizer with an eye for intricate detail. They are ready to champion and guide EPIP's internal organizational culture and partner with the Executive Director to support EPIP's efforts. This position will require occasional travel (approximately 5%); however, employee travel is currently halted due to COVID-19 safety precautions until further notice.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The Chief of Staff focuses on three primary areas: executive and board support, administrative coordination and project management, and internal operations and culture. In this capacity, this leader will streamline work, help to set internal strategic and operational priorities, and oversee culture-building initiatives across the organization.

Executive & Board Support

  • Serves as a strategic advisor and participates with the Executive Director and senior management team in strategic planning, policy development, and decision-making
  • Acts as the liaison between the Executive Director and other stakeholders to ensure consistent communication and informed decision-making
  • Manages the Executive Director's office, including drafting correspondence, calendar management, expense tracking, reimbursements, travel coordination, and meeting notes

Administrative Coordination and Project Management

  • Ensures project management systems are implemented and used effectively and consistently across the organization, monitors progress in meeting goals and tracking metrics
  • Conducts short term research projects as assigned, including reading, analyzing, and synthesizing information from multiple sources to assist the Executive Director and leadership team to foster a learning culture within the organization
  • Helps address and troubleshoot issues that may arise and develops and implements innovative and effective solutions among staff

Internal Operations and Culture

  • Plans and implements organizational events to foster continued learning around leadership development and sector-wide trends
  • Facilitates smooth communication and collaboration throughout the organization to ensure projects are moving forward and staff remain well-informed and supported to deliver high-quality work
  • Works in collaboration with the Finance and Operations Manager to ensure the design and implementation of systems that optimize effective cooperation and support EPIP's infrastructure
  • Works in collaboration with EPIP staff to identify and recruit dynamic, values-aligned talent

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • A strong understanding of operational systems and structures to facilitate collaboration within a remote organization
  • At least 8-10 years of experience working closely with executive leadership, preferably with cross-functional experience as a Chief of Staff or in a similar role
  • Collaborative team player who participates in all levels of tasks to accomplish goals
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Software experience: Google Suite, MS Office, Salesforce, Asana, Zoom
  • Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced and transitioning environments
  • Demonstrated ability to hold multiple projects/tasks simultaneously

Compensation and Benefits

This position reports to the Executive Director and is a permanent, remote, exempt position that will be compensated in the $100,000 -$125,000 range.
