Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP), a fiscally-sponsored project of Tides, is a growing community of foundation professionals and other changemakers working to advance equity within and through philanthropy. EPIP's mission is to empower emerging leaders and elevate philanthropic practice to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable world. EPIP has established itself as a leading network for diverse early-and mid-career philanthropic professionals, particularly those who identify as people of color, women, and/or LGBTQ. EPIP's 14 member-led chapters span the country and provide peer-to-peer programs, networking opportunities, and support while serving as platforms for member leadership.  National programs like the biannual conference and Philanthropology, coupled with local programming led by EPIP Chapters, connect members to additional support, knowledge, and opportunities.

About the Opportunity

EPIP has experienced tremendous growth and transition since the implementation of the 2017 Strategic Plan. EPIP's Director of Advancement will help lead the organization in its next financial and organizational growth phase. The ideal candidate will be dynamic, highly organized, relational, and a strong communicator. They will see change as an exciting opportunity for growth for the organization. The ideal candidate will provide vision and leadership in creating and implementing a fundraising strategy that contributes to the organization's long-term financial sustainability. They will maintain and grow EPIP's annual budget from $1 million to $5 million over the next several years by identifying, cultivating, and managing new donor relationships. The ideal candidate will shape and oversee EPIP's development plans for foundations, organizations, major and small individual donors and focus on helping to diversify EPIP's income and financial support sources.

The ideal candidate will also serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director, working closely with EPIP's senior leadership team and Advisory Board and staff to develop an inclusive culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and current and former members. This position will require occasional travel (approximately 15%); however, employee travel is currently halted due to COVID-19 safety precautions until further notice.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The Director of Advancement will be hands-on and responsible for developing and implementing a strategic fundraising plan that builds upon EPIP's current portfolio of donors while creating interest for additional corporate, foundation, and individual donors to become consistent contributors supporting EPIP's mission.
Key roles and responsibilities include:

Development Strategy

  • Identifies organizational funding needs in collaboration with the Executive Director and staff
  • Establishes metrics to gauge the effectiveness of development strategies, including new donor prospecting, contributor recognition, and retention efforts
  • Ensures that fundraising efforts are in alignment with the organization's initiatives and values
  • Trains, mentors, and supports EPIP staff and Board to nurture a culture of fundraising throughout the organization via the development of practices and processes where appropriate
  • Works closely with the Board's Development & Finance Committee and collaborates with the Executive Director to engage board members in fundraising efforts
  • Attends Board meetings and presents progress towards fundraising goals

Donor Prospecting & Communications

  • Researches and identifies new foundation, corporate and individual giving prospects based on EPIP's programmatic initiatives, cultivating new funding relationships and opportunities
  • Oversees donor stewardship, prospecting, and retention efforts, including funder communications and solicitations, preparing for donor meetings, developing the annual appeal, and other donor engagement strategies
  • Ensures, in collaboration with the Director of Membership & Communications, accurate tracking and maintenance of information for contributors and prospects in Salesforce
  • Develops, in partnership with the Director of Membership & Communications, donor marketing and communications efforts, strategies and protocols for comprehensive and multifaceted donor communication and messaging plan to support fundraising outreach

Resource Mobilization & Stewardship

  • Leads the preparation and submission of grant proposals and reports and stewards a portfolio of current institutional funders to ensure timely, quality submission of proposals and fulfillment of reporting requirements
  • Oversees the fundraising budget and actively manages revenue to ensure that annual operating budget objectives and plan goals are met
  • Tracks multi-year revenue and fundraising trends and uses results to forecast future opportunities strategically
  • Works with the Executive Director and Finance & Operations Manager to provide revenue projections and reports - including support monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliation processes
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the philanthropic landscape to pursue opportunistic partnerships as they relate to individual donors, major donors, giving trends, and charitable contributions that align with EPIP's mission and initiatives
  • Creates and generates reports for tracking fundraising efforts as needed
  • Reviews and updates development policy documents as needed
  • Maintains up-to-date calendar and work plans for all development efforts, including donor communications and events

Talent Development & Organization Culture

  • Supports the creation of a supportive, collaborative, productive, and healthy work environment by modeling non-violent, harm-reducing management styles
  • Serves on EPIP's leadership team to help guide the organization's strategic direction
  • Supports the organization's commitment to justice, racial equity, and inclusion
  • Develops, coaches, and supervises support team members providing timely, constructive feedback and encouraging their participation in professional development opportunities

What You'll Need:

  • Minimum of eight years of fundraising experience from foundations, high net worth individuals, and corporations
  • Three years of experience managing others
  • Proven success in bringing in new and increased sources of funding
  • Demonstrated commitment to EPIP's values, particularly social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Experience securing support for a mission-driven nonprofit or membership association from a variety of sources, including major donors, institutional funders, digital and social media, special events, corporate partnerships, and grassroots campaigns
  • A workable understanding of intersectionality, social justice philanthropy, and community-centric fundraising
  • Familiarity with Donor Management Systems or Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM)
  • Knowledge and curiosity about trends and best practices in resource development
  • Ability to be a strong team player with a small staff and to pitch in with all work required
Compensation and Benefits

This position reports to the Executive Director and is a permanent, remote, exempt position that will be compensated in the $115,000 - $125,000 range.
