In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on communities across Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee, we at Out in the South stand in solidarity with all those affected by this natural disaster. Our hearts go out to the individuals and families who have faced unimaginable loss and disruption.
As an initiative dedicated to uplifting LGBTQ voices and experiences in the South, we recognize that hurricanes do not discriminate; they impact everyone. Yet, the resilience and strength of our LGBTQ communities shine through even in the darkest times. We honor the courage of those who are coming together to support one another, rebuild, and restore hope.
We stand in solidarity with the following grantee organizations that have been directly affected by the storm: the Queer Mobilization Fund at Southern Vision Alliance, the Southern Equality Fund at the Campaign for Southern Equality, the Contigo Fund, the LGBT Fund at the Spartanburg County Foundation, CoThinkk, and the Southern Power Fund. These organizations not only provide funding support for LGBTQ organizations in some of the most rural areas in the South, but also play vital roles in community resilience and recovery during crises.
We call on funders and allies to join us in supporting these essential organizations as they respond to the immediate needs of their communities. Your contributions will help ensure that LGBTQ communities receive the resources, support, and care they deserve in this critical time. Now is the moment to demonstrate our commitment to transform philanthropy in the U.S. South to honor the fact that LGBTQ people and families are a part of every community in the region, by standing with those who are rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of this disaster. Together, we can help foster resilience within our Southern region.
