The 2016 Tracking Report (2018) explores the scope and character of foundation funding for LGBTQ issues in the calendar year 2016. The report analyzes 6,032 grants from 348 foundations, making it the most comprehensive assessment of LGBTQ funding available.

The year 2016 brought with it a historic milestone: LGBTQ grantmaking surpassed $200 million for the first time ever. At $202.3 million, we exceeded our strategic goal of $200 million in foundation funding for LGBTQ issues by 2017.

However, given the story behind this milestone, it is cause for neither celebration nor declaration of victory. The sharp rise in LGBTQ funding in 2016 was driven in large part by approximately $30 million in funding in response to the Pulse Nightclub Massacre in Orlando, the most violent attack on the LGBTQ community in our history. Without OneOrlando grantmaking, LGBTQ funding reached a record high of $172.8 million, short of the strategic goal of $200 million.
