While the increase was largely driven by philanthropic support addressing the Pulse Nightclub Massacre in Orlando, a number of foundations also helped contribute to that increase by significantly stepping up their investments in LGBTQ communities. In 2016, 91 foundations increased their LGBTQ grantmaking and 109 foundations decreased their LGBTQ grantmaking.
