Today the Supreme Court of the United States hears oral arguments on three cases which will decide whether or not lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people are protected from employment discrimination under existing law (Gerald Lynn Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia; Altitude Express v. Melissa Zarda; and R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). The Court is being asked whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, includes LGTBQ people. The Out in the South Fund continues its work of supporting and building sustainable LGBTQ funds led by and for LGBTQ Southerners and shaped by a commitment to racial and gender justice. This strategy is a response to the decades of underfunding of Southern LGBTQ communities and is designed to build long-term resources for a healthy movement ecosystem of LGBTQ organizations rooted in the South. In 2013, we launched what has since become known as our Out in the South Initiative with the goal of increasing funding for LGBTQ communities throughout the US South. In 2014 we released Out in the South, Part One: Foundation Funding for LGBTQ Issues in the U.S. South, the first report that looked specifically at philanthropic support for LGBTQ communities in the South.
