My Gay Brother’s Keeper

Ten leading foundations recently announced a historic commitment to invest at least $350 million in grants to improve health, education, and economic outcomes for boys and young men of color. President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative seeks to advance the same goals, working in close concert with philanthropic partners. The 7 Best Reads Before Funding Forward 2014

We have an amazing slate of speakers lined up for this year’s Funding Forward. To help get you ready for our annual conference of grantmakers committed to LGBTQ issues, we thought we’re compile some of the best pre-reading available. (See the full Funding Forward schedule here.) Youth Criminalization Thursday morning’s plenary will focus on the plight of the approximately 300,000 gay and transgender youth arrested and detained each year. The Top 10 Funders of African American LGBTQ Communitites

In honor of Black History Month, we thought we’d take a closer look at the $5.9 million awarded specifically for African American LGBTQ communities between 2011-2012. During that time, the top 10 funders were: Elton John AIDS Foundation ($ 1,342,950) Ford Foundation ($ 949,000) Arcus Foundation ($ 687,811) Gill Foundation ($ 575,300) Evelyn & Walter Haas Jr. Fund ($ 390,000) H. van Ameringen Foundation ($ 330,000) Open Society Foundation ($ 300,000) Levi Strauss Foundation ($ 155,000) Liberty Hill Foundation ($ 150,250) Healthcare Foundation of NJ ($ 150,000) Nearly half of this funding – $2.5 million – went towards addressing HIV/AIDS.
