We are thrilled to welcome three new members to the Funders for LGBTQ Issues Board of Directors: Karina Claudio Betancourt (Program Officer, Open Society Foundations), Rickke Mananzala (Director of Programs, Borealis Philanthropy), and Jason McGill (Co-Executive Director, Arcus Foundation). Funders for LGBTQ Issues also bid fond farewell to two board members after six years of service: Cindy Rizzo of the Arcus Foundation and Mitchell Singer of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. This evening, the Trump administration rescinded protections for transgender youth from discrimination in schools, based on the Title IX laws that prohibit discrimination based on sex. This decision sends a clear message that the Trump administration is no friend to LGBTQ people and will not protect the most vulnerable among us. Funders for LGBTQ Issues stands alongside many of our members and partners in firm opposition to this decision. Creating Change 2017 is almost here! Thousands of LGBTQ activists will converge in Philadelphia this week for the annual national conference for LGBTQ leaders and organizers. As in prior year, many funders will join them. This fall, Funders for LGBTQ Issues collaborated with local partners in seven cities to advance philanthropy for LGBTQ communities. These events ranged from panel discussions to immersion tours, but at each one we explored the most urgent needs facing LGBTQ communities. Across the country, local funders are stepping up their leadership for LGBTQ communities and exploring innovative models, such as developing LGBTQ-friendly neighborhoods, building a local center for LGBTQ philanthropy, and convening cross-sector partnerships to address youth homelessness.
